For more than twenty-five years, the Astor Piazzolla Quintet has preserved and honoured the legacy of revolutionary bandoneon player and composer, Astor Piazzolla. For over three decades, the quintet has toured the United States, Latin America, Europe, Australia and Asia, to unanimous critical acclaim, and during this time it has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. Among them, two Latin Grammys for Best Tango Album (2019 and 2023), which served to consolidate its international reputation and prestige.
The quintet is made up of five virtuoso soloists, all of whom have distinguished careers and are deeply committed to Piazzolla's aesthetic. Under the musical direction of Julián Vat, the Astor Piazzolla Quintet keeps alive a fundamental repertoire, preserving the essence of the transformation that Piazzolla brought to tango. The quintet revitalises Piazzolla's classics as well as his lesser-known works, bringing a fresh spirit to it all, so much so that the music seems to spring directly from the composer himself.
In 1960, Astor Piazzolla created his original quintet, establishing an ensemble that would prove decisive to the development of Nuevo Tango, the genre he so decisively drove throughout that decade, leaving an indelible trace on 20th century music: bandoneon, violin, electric guitar, piano and double bass.
The musicians who accompanied Piazzolla were exceptional, held in very high regard by the composer himself for their ability to reinterpret and bring even greater richness to his music with their own unique voices. During the 1970s, his move to Europe led to a hiatus in the quintet's activity, but it came together again in 1978 with a new line-up that accompanied him until 1988. That period coincided with definitive international recognition and a repertoire that combined the Nuevo Tango of the 1960s with new compositions that would yield true masterpieces.
This is going to be a unique experience: nothing less than a concert in which Piazzolla's academic work and popular repertoire are pitted together, engaging in dialogue with each other across different moments of creativity, with intensity and passion; connecting past and present while maintaining the essence of one of the great musical creators of the 20th century, alive and strong.
