Maite Akustik Quintet

In this acoustic project, Jazz is the unifying thread of a veritable musical migration; a vibrant and flexible language that allows for the integration of roots as well as exploration, tradition and discovery. The quintet fuses the expressive freedom of Jazz, allowing music to be not just a mere reproduction of the past. They are compositions in their own right, which draw, allegorically, upon the migration of birds as inspiration. This sound journey serves up parallels with the experience of Maite Ruiz, who leaves her land of birth, the Basque Country, to immerse herself in other cultures. The concert is, in essence, a journey that celebrates Basque culture, the desire to step out and discover new horizons, while feasting upon what is encountered along the way. And, it is, ultimately, the reflection of that which is learnt along the way.

Román Filiú: Suite Oriental

In his Suite Oriental, Cuban multi-instrumentalist, Román Filiú, garners inspiration in the vast musical repertoire of the Oriente region of Cuba (Tumba Francesa, trova, son, etc.), which he combines with New York avant-garde sounds. The quintet format offers the flexibility necessary for transcending from simple accompaniment as a Jazz group, where it’s often all about improvisation, to a small chamber ensemble in which, as a soloist, he can fully embrace composition and form. This work was commissioned by the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Conde Duque, in 2021. Among the many awards and grants received throughout his career, the most recent is the CINTAS Fellowship of Music Composition for 2024, bestowed upon him thanks to this work.
