Vincent Peirani - Living Being IV (Time Reflections)

Vincent Peirani (accordion), Émile Parisien (soprano saxophone), Yoann Serra (drums), Julien Herné (bass), Tony Paeleman (Fender Rhodes)

Virtuoso French accordionist, Vincent Peirani, one of the most innovative and versatile voices in European Jazz, presents Living Being IV, the latest chapter in an ongoing musical adventure that has been taking shape since 2015. In this work, Peirani continues to expand the sound universe of Living Being, five great musicians who come together to stomp together, completely given over to exploration and creative impulse. It is a project in which every concert is a unique experience.

The album was born in the early months of the pandemic, during a period of forced pause that led the musician to reflect on how time shapes our lives. The result is a work in which textures and dynamics converge to engage in dialogue with baroque, traditional dances and contemporary rhythms. Peirani is meticulous, an “architect of sound”, capable of weaving together complex narratives that are not, on that account, any less easily accessible.

The album incorporates tributes to those who have been essential to him in his career - core influences: a tribute to Lionel Loueke, echoes of his collaboration with Michael Wollny. All of that worked into a language that is unmistakably his, which is also influenced by the music of Queen, David Bowie, Portishead or The Beatles. The sound palette is broadened with forays into dub and traditional Balkan melodies. But the entire whole bears the unmistakable imprint of Peirani, accordionist and composer who offers us, here, his most personal musical portrait to date.

New Sketches of Spain: Erik Truffaz – Antonio Lizana

Erik Truffaz (trumpet), Antonio Lizana (vocals, alto saxophone, flute), Renaud Gabriel Pion (bass clarinet, English horn, arrangements), Sara Sanchéz (dance), Pau Figueres (guitar), Arin Keshishi (electric bass), Manuel de la Torre (drums), Vincent Thomas (percussion)

Miles Davis created Sketches of Spain (1960) drawing inspiration from his discovery of Spanish roots music, from Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez to the expressive universe of flamenco. That work opened Jazz up to new sonic territories with an intense and deeply poetic vision that represented a turning point in the way Jazz embraced world music.

Decades later, Swiss musician Erik Truffaz, one of the best and most singular trumpeters in Europe - the seal of constant innovation runs across his career - revisited the legacy of Miles Davis from his own perspective. His encounter with Antonio Lizana, one of the most prominent artists in contemporary Flamenco-Jazz, saxophonist and cantaor, led to the New Sketches of Spain project. It is a work that revisits that classic from the present, to commemorates the centenary of the birth of Miles Davis, in 2026.

Combining flamenco tradition with the freedom of contemporary Jazz, Lizana brings unmistakable stage energy to this undertaking. While Truffaz, for his part, a brilliant, creative disciple of his glorious predecessor, proves that he is one of the great European trumpeters today.

A concert to celebrate and remember the music of Miles Davis, the Prince of Darkness who found the light in the land of Cervantes and García Lorca.
